HIGHS
Superb V-8 engine and excellent inline-sixes; smooth auto transmissions shift even faster now; balanced handling.
  LOWS
Styling doesn’t appeal to all; V-8 version is very expensive; iDrive system is a curse.

WHAT'S NEW
Redesigned for 2004; the revised engine lineup is the most notable update for ’08.
  BEHIND THE WHEEL
The fine chassis is happiest with the six-cylinder engines, and the twin-turbo six renders the V-8 obsolete.

CAPSULE REVIEW
The previous-generation 5-series was a clear class leader, but the current model faces stiff competition from Japanese and German rivals. The styling is somewhat controversial and there are better values out there, but it is a fine car to drive, especially in twin-turbo 535i trim.

2008 BMW 5 Series

Perhaps not wanting to steal buzz from the 3-series cabriolet it debuted in Detroit, BMW chose to reveal its plans for the 2008 5-series with a quiet press release, rather than a big introduction at the show. Then again, ‘tis a quiet update the 5-series receives, certainly not the sort for which the international media need be corralled.

Most predictably, the new six-cylinder engines making the rounds in the 3-series are filtering into the engine bays of the big-brother sedans. The 528i gets the same 230 hp, 200 lb-ft 3.0-liter as the smaller 328i, and the fantastic twin-turbo, 300 hp, 300 lb-ft 3.0-liter we first encountered in the 335i coupe evolves the 530i into a 535i with gains of 45 hp and 80 lb-ft. We look forward to sampling this engine in the bigger sedan. The 360-hp 4.8-liter V-8 in the 550i remains unchanged.

What we don’t look forward to on the 2008 BMW 5-series is the deeper infiltration of a serene interior by electronic annoyances. A new lane-departure system like that found on various Infiniti models does not warn of wandering with any audible or visual cues, but by a vibration in the steering wheel! Is that a rumble strip? Low tire? Nope. Just a little inter-lane wandering. It better be defeatable.

Visual cues on the 2008 will be subtle. The turn signals in the rear will be LEDs, while those up front get clear lenses. The side sill gets a minor crease, and the lower air intake in the front fascia will turn up at the edges instead of down and have a horizontal crossbar. Those with truly sharp eyes will notice these cars turning up by this summer; everyone else will have to wait to feel the difference created by the new engines.
